This discussion was part of the ongoing Maria & Modernism exhibition, currently on view in the Virginia G. Piper Grand Gallery. The exhibition showcases the work of San Ildefonso ceramicist, Maria Martinez. Despite her significant contributions and decades of research, exhibitions, and scholarship, Maria has yet to be recognized as a prominent American Modernist. Maria & Modernism aims to correct this by presenting her pottery as aligned with major artistic and creative movements of her time, including decorative and industrial design, and highlighting her enduring influence on 21st-century artists.
