Space Makers: Indigenous Expression and a New American Art examines mid-century American art movement known as the Indian Space Painters and their connections to Indigenous art and culture. This exhibition highlights how non-Native painters were inspired by Indigenous visual traditions and how modern Native artists built upon these influences with their own heritage. Space Makers reconfigures American art history by emphasizing its Indigenous roots in aesthetics, geography, and social context.
