ADVANCING AMERICAN INDIAN ART

Billie Jane Baguley Library and Archives Collection Spotlight for March 2016

March 18, 2016

The fourth Tuesday in March has been designated as Diabetes Alert Day by the American Diabetes Association. This designation is intended to focus attention on the seriousness of this disease and to raise awareness of the health implications of undiagnosed or untreated cases. Diabetes is a health issue for close to 10% of American society and the disease is extremely prevalent among Native American and Alaska Native populations in particular. The goal of preventing diabetes in these communities is tied to understanding the links between the cultural role of food, the impacts of federal policies and the history of the disease in these same communities. From a graphic novel aimed at middle schoolers in Native communities to a scholarly volume on medical anthropology, these four selections currently on display in the public reading area of the library highlight the diversity of titles in the library collection related to the understanding and prevention of diabetes. Please feel free to visit the library to review these or any other items of interest in the library and archives collections.
