The Heard Museum is throwing a Ho’olaule’a to celebrate the opening of our new exhibition, He`e Nalu: The Art and Legacy of Hawaiian Surfing. The museum’s campus will be alive with music and dance, with artists coming to the desert direct from Hawai’i, including the acclaimed John Rivera Collective and Hālau Ka Lei Mokihana o Leinā’ala, the reigning champions of the world’s premier Hula competition, the Merrie Monarch Festival. We’ll be serving up Hawaiian food, fun and activities for visitors of all ages! Come get a taste of the islands at the Heard Museum as our First Friday rides the wave into Saturday, January 6 & 7.
(First) Friday, January 6. 5 – 9 p.m.
Following a traditional Hawaiian Oli (blessing), the official opening of the exhibition will feature music and dancing from the John Rivera Collective and Hālau Ka Lei Mokihana o Leinā’ala. The Heard’s Dickey Family Director and CEO, David M. Roche, and Guest Curator for He’e Nalu, Carolyn Kuali`i will be on hand to welcome you and talk about this original exhibition, and we’ll have some of the artists on hand to talk about their work inside the gallery. Be among the first to see He’e Nalu at the Heard Museum on First Friday.

On Saturday, the celebration gets even bigger as the whole Heard Museum campus comes to life with Hawaiian culture! In partnership with our friends at the Arizona Aloha Festival and Lau Kānaka No Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Civic Club of Arizona), we’ll be presenting a full day of fun, including music and dancing from the John Rivera Collective and Hālau Ka Lei Mokihana o Leinā’ala; keiki (kids) games and activities; a surfing photo booth; paddling lessons; an ukulele workshop and a hula workshop; presentations from Guest Curator for He’e Nalu, Carolyn Kuali`i, participating artists, and Hawaiian cultural knowledge keepers; and so much more! We’ll have food trucks, the Heard Museum’s Café and Cantina will be open for food and drink, and don’t forget to stop into the award-winning Heard Museum Shop. Come say Aloha at the Heard!
