Behind the Scenes

Sash Belt Workshop at Hubbell Trading Post

Watch as Master Artist Sheilah Manuelito (Navajo) Shares the Art of Sash Belt Weaving at Hubbell Trading Post

Watch workshop participants learn the art of Sash Belt Weaving at the historic Hubbell Trading Post in Ganado, Arizona. During this four-day workshop in the summer of 2025, the students learned the process of setting up the loom, spinning yarn, fiber dyeing, and fringe-making. This immersive program fostered cultural exchange and strengthened connections to Indigenous heritage through hands-on learning.

The Heard Museum’s Master Artist Workshop program is dedicated to preserving and strengthening customary art skills and knowledge for the benefit of Native communities throughout the Southwest. The goal for the workshops is to encourage the participants to take the skills and knowledge learned from our master artists and share with their communities.
