ADVANCING AMERICAN INDIAN ART

Billie Jane Baguley Library and Archives Collection Spotlight for May, 2018

May 8, 2018

After a decade-long hiatus, the Heard Museum revitalizes its role in presenting contemporary American Indian artwork with this month’s opening of the exhibit, Dear Listener: Works by Nicholas Galanin. The exhibit includes examples of both Galanin’s solo and collaborative works. The Heard has a history of showcasing contemporary art that spans more than 50 years with exhibits of Native fine art by innovative artists whether in solo or group exhibitions. To a certain extent, a survey of contemporary Native art was accomplished over the years through the numerous Heard one-person shows and group invitationals. To examine single exhibitions within the past few decades that attempted to survey contemporary Native fine art, here are four selections from the Library collection that convey a diversity of mediums, methods, and messages expressed by creative and inventive artists. These examples are currently on display in the public reading area of the Library.

Please feel free to visit the Library to review these or any other items of interest in the Library and Archives collections.
