Supporting the creative efforts of Native artists, authors and illustrators is a significant component in the work of the Heard Museum. One of the ways the Library accomplishes this task is by acquiring books and other resources for the collection directly from Native-owned and Native-operated publishing companies such as Kegedonce Press. According to their website, the company is “one of only three dedicated Indigenous publishers in Canada”. For more than 25 years, the Kegedonce Press has published works by well-established and award-winning Canadian contemporary authors such as Basil Johnston (Anishinaabe) and Joanne Arnott (Metis). However, the company is also known for encouraging new enterprises and authors such as when the Kynship Chronicles by Daniel Heath Justice (Cherokee Nation) were published and promoted as the “first aboriginal fantasy trilogy”. The following selections from the Library collection demonstrate a diversity of genres and writing styles but all works are imbued with an Indigenous perspective. These particular examples published by Kegedonce Press including short stories, poetry, nonfiction and fantasy are currently on display in the public reading area of the Library. Please feel free to visit the Library to review these or any other items of interest in the Library and Archives collections.
