A natural wonder and an Arizona point of pride, the Grand Canyon region was officially designated a national park on February 26, 1919. For a landform that can be measured in geologic time, celebrating 100 years as part of the United States National Park System may seem like a mere flicker. This month’s spotlight honors the Grand Canyon by highlighting books from the collection that make use of historical timeframes somewhere in between. Grand Canyon was the 15th national treasure to receive federal protection and be held in the public trust as a national park. The importance of protecting this specific natural history was underscored in 1979 when the park was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The following four selections detail the natural resources of the park as well as describe the resourcefulness of the people who have called this land home over millennia. These examples reflecting on this awe-inspiring landscape are currently on display in the public reading area of the Library.
