Behind the Scenes

Making Mantas with Master Artist Shirley Pino

Watch the Continuation of Tradition as Shirley Pino (Santa Ana Pueblo) Leads a Workshop on the Art of Pueblo Clothing

The Heard Museum recently collaborated with Shirley Pino of Red Wing Collections from Santa Ana Pueblo, NM. Shirley has devoted much of her life to creating Pueblo clothing and fashion. She regards sewing and garment-making a treasured gift—an art form that serves as a powerful means of safeguarding her community’s cultural heritage. In this Master Artist Workshop, Pino taught 14 people from 7 Pueblos. Watch their journey as they create garments they can wear to their ceremonies.

Our Master Artist Workshop program is dedicated to preserving and strengthening customary art skills and knowledge for the benefit of Native communities throughout the Southwest. The goal for the workshops is to encourage the participants to take the skills and knowledge and share with their communities.
