The Heard’s popular evening series, Native + You, or NU, is back, during First Fridays, the popular monthly Central Phoenix celebration of the arts! Visitors can enjoy the Heard’s 12 exhibit galleries, nationally-acclaimed Courtyard Café and gourmet drinks at the Coffee Cantina, and see the best in Native art at the Heard Shops. And we’re easily accessible by Valley Metro Light Rail; the Heard has its own stop on Central directly across the street from the museum! Get on at Roosevelt and head north two stops to Encanto!
In December, the theme is “Literary Treasures,” coinciding with the first day of our annual Guild Book Sale and Treasure Market. Seek a favorite tome or treasure from 5 to 9 p.m. And there’s much more:
–Our featured DJ, M. Rocka (left), will be spinning your favorites, applying different musical styles from his Southern California roots for your musical enjoyment.
–Meet and greet Navajo silversmith Sampson Gray in Bruce McGee’s Collectors’ Room in the Howard R. and Joy M. Berlin Museum Shop. Light refreshments will be served.
–Tap out your poetry! Our haiku-writing battle — using typewriters — is at 8 p.m. in the Central Courtyard! (We’ll have open haiku writing from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the Lincoln Gallery.)
–At 7 and at 9 p.m., hear live poetry readings by the Black Poet Ventures (below right).
Members of Black Poet Ventures will read poetry at First Fridays: Native + You at the Heard Museum on Dec. 5.
–Visit our craft table where you can use our button-making machine to create your own unique lapel-wear!
–Get your holiday picture taken by our popular photo booth!
–Purchase special prints from “Warbird Press” printmaker Jacob Meders (Mechoopda Maidu) (below left) for $3 each. Available exclusively during First Fridays/NU.
Every first Friday of the month except March, the Heard offers free admission from 6 to 10 p.m., where NU will bring fun and fresh events to the Heard to share the cultural pulse of Phoenix and the Southwest today!
Jacob Meders’ (Mechoopda) Warbird Press will be making prints for $3 each at First Fridays: Native + You on Dec. 5.
Free and open to the public. The December NU is presented by the Heard Museum Council.
