K-12 Educator Night: Hoop Dance & Movement in the Classroom

Arizona educators, you are invited to the Heard Museum on January 20 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. for Educator Night.  

Join us for an evening of professional learning, networking, and an exclusive after-hours tour of HOME: Native People in the Southwest exhibition. This Educator Night will feature the expertise of Tony Duncan (San Carlos Apache/Mandan-Hidatsa-Arikara), five-time World Champion hoop dancer. Duncan will provide a 45-minute presentation on the importance and values of hoop dance and will perform a hoop dance presentation.  

The evening will also provide a presentation from Arizona Department of Education. Educators will learn the practical application of incorporating dance education and movement into their classroom.  

In addition to touring the HOME: Native People of the Southwest exhibition and learning from the special guests, educators will also enjoy: 

  • Light refreshments 
  • Take home resources 
  • Information about the Heard Museum’s resources for teachers

2:00 to 2:30 p.m. Check-in, networking, and refreshments in Steele Auditorium 

2:30 to 3:00 p.m. Guided tour of HOME exhibition in the galleries 

3:00 to 3:15 p.m. Presentation from the Learning and Engagement team 

3:15 to 4:15 p.m. Presentation from Tony Duncan and hoop dance performance 

4:15 to 4:45 p.m. Presentation from Arizona Department of Education

4:45 to 5:00 p.m. Complete survey, collect swag and other resources, and receive Professional Development certificate
