First Fridays at the Heard: ‘Super Kids’!

Native + You: July

Join us for a special evening where kids become the super heroes in training!

  • We’ll have DJ Seduce spinning Brazilian beats from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Axe Capoeira will provide two special tutorials of movements kids can practice at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. The group will also share a special session at 9 p.m.
Axe Capoeira, Brazilian martial arts and dance team, performs July 3 at First Friday: Native + You at the Heard Museum.

  • In addition, the young and young at heart can challenge their friends (or foes) to a playful jousting battle with safe soft, padded materials from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • And visit Books & More to meet contemporary artist Joe Hopkins (Muskogee/Creek/Seminole) where he will be demonstrating and selling his artwork. You can see examples of his work here.

(A $5-per-person gate fee is charged non-museum-members visiting the exhibit Super Heroes: Art! Action! Adventure!)

About Joe Hopkins:

[This] versatile artist manifests his vision by blending history with the contemporary. Hopkins describes his inspiration as “bringing the old into the today. The old photographs, the old images of us that show the struggle. You can see it in the faces. You can see it in what the photo captures. I try to bring that into a more modern, contemporary, fun [expression]. That’s why I use bright colors, with the old black-and-white or sepia tone photographs.
