Día de los Muertos at the Heard Museum: Spotlighting Yaqui Traditions

MUKIA ANIA – YAQUI DAY OF THE DEAD

Presentation in partnership with The Heard Museum and the Yaqui Pride Project

Join us at the Heard Museum for First Friday and experience why Phoenix New Times named us “Best First Friday” in 2023!

Our FREE celebration of Día de los Muertos will feature Profesora Patricia Mejia Ruiz, PhD., will discuss her research on the Yaqui Day of the Dead as featured in the Culturas Populares documentary short, “Mukia Ania” and compare its differences from other indigenous groups in Mexico and throughout the Americas.

Visitors will have the opportunity to:

  • Listen to a special discussion and breakdown of the Yaqui ”tapanco,” or often referred to as the “mesita,” by Guadalupe Maestro, Jose Miguel Casias and guests from Rio Yaqui, Sonora.
  • Play Lotería, a type of pictorial bingo, in Spanish and Yaqui
  • Enjoy the artistry of the Guadalupe Youth Yaqui Dance cultural group led by Oscar Martinez.
  • Learn from community partners, including the Yaqui Pride Project and more!

Visiting on First Friday is also an excellent time to see the newest exhibition at the Heard Museum, Early Days: Indigenous Art from the McMichael, which showcases the diversity and vitality of Indigenous art in Canada.
