Central California Basket Making with Artist Collaborators Monique Sonoquie & Jilli Oyenque

Join us on a Journey to Central California, a Region Renowned for Its Rich Basket Weaving Traditions and Vibrant Cultural Heritage

This short film highlights a unique basketry class that provided participants with an opportunity to connect with both familiar and new weaving materials while learning traditional techniques on Chumash lands in central California. The experience also fostered a meaningful cultural exchange through art sharing with a basketry artist from New Mexico, where red willow and other natural materials are similarly used in basket making. Through hands-on learning and cross-cultural connections, the film celebrates the enduring artistry, knowledge, and community woven into basket-making traditions.
