The Heard Museum celebrates American Indian cultures and art, providing an exceptional place for parents and children to learn about diverse cultures and building enhanced cross-cultural understanding. From exhibitions filled with interactive, hands-on learning to festivals and events, the Heard offers a vast array of experiences for families and children.
Exhibitions
Every Picture Tells a Story
From making a dragonfly or butterfly to exploring the Arctic and creating your own bandolier bag, this exhibition journeys to seven regions and shows how American Indian artists reflect their environments in their artwork.
Children and adults can enjoy nearly a dozen hands-on activities, many of which can be taken home, as well as see outstanding artwork and share stories from each of the regions.
We Are! Arizona’s First People
Arizona’s 21 federally recognized tribal communities share the importance of land and family as well as the preservation of languages and traditions in this interactive gallery. Hands-on activities throughout are fun for children of all ages.
HOME: Native People in the Southwest
Interactive kiosks, videos, great collections and flip books make the museum’s signature exhibition a great place for kids and their adults to learn about Southwestern American Indians. Plus, step inside a Navajo hogan, view a Hopi corn grinding room and imaging baking bread in a Pueblo horno (oven).
Family Events & Programs
The Heard’s events are perfect for families with children looking for unique cultural experiences. Many offer music and dance performances, artist demonstrations and hands-on activities. Children can meet the artists, make their own art or, in many cases, participate in a round dance.
