Celebrate Hispanic Culture
at the Valley's Premier
Spanish Market, Nov. 9 & 10
Celebrate the tradition and artistry of Hispanic culture at the Heard Museum’s 12th Annual Spanish Market, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 9 & 10, 2013, at the Heard's Phoenix campus.
Strolling mariachis, folklorico dancers and artwork by Hispanic artists from Arizona, New Mexico and South America highlight this festive, casual and friendly annual marketplace, the largest of its kind in Arizona. Chat with more than 75 artists as they sell a range of distinctive and unique artwork.
With art in every price range, Spanish Market offers buyers a wide selection of objects from different Hispanic traditions, including santos, pottery, embroidery, furniture making, painting, printmaking, and silver and tinwork.
The Courtyard Café will offer a menu of festive and traditional foods. Mariachis will stroll the grounds on Saturday and Sunday.
This year's Spanish Market's Featured Artist is Ralph Sena (Hispanic) of Albuquerque, N.M., whose pendant is at top left.
Sena [right], who comes from a long line of blacksmiths, used a silver quarter to make his first piece of jewelry at St. Michael’s High School. He then gave that ring to Diana Roybal, who later became his wife. He is now famous for his silver crosses and filigree work.
His knowledge and experience as a master jeweler derives from many hours spent watching and interacting with Native American artisans and other local jewelers such as Adolfo Ortiz. His work has been shown around the world and he is an active mentor to several young Hispanic artists.
Sena was recently honored at the 2011 Spanish Colonial Market in Santa Fe, N.M., where he received the Masters Award for Lifetime Achievement. His jewelry is exhibited at the New Mexico History Museum, the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, the Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos, N.M., and the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Ariz.
